La montaña empieza a cautivar nuestros sentidos ya desde lejos. Para subir al monasterio, fundado en el año 1025, se puede elegir entre los caminos de a pie, carretera, el Cremallera o el Teleférico. Sea cual sea nuestro medio de ascensión, el viaje que parece hacia el cielo, nos deleitará con unas impresionantes vistas. Para los peregrinos, el momento más esperado es la visita a la Virgen de Montserrat, conocida cariñosamente como “La Moreneta”. Cuenta la tradición que unos pastores la descubrieron en una cueva de la montaña. Al querer llevarsela de ahí y a medida que se alejaban de la cueva, la imagen pesaba cada vez más y más, por lo que decidieron que debía permanecer en aquel lugar para siempre. El Funicular de la Santa Cova desciende hasta el camino que conduce a la cueva, el Rosario monumental que es el conjunto histórico más importante del modernismo catalán.
Desde el monasterio, a pie o con el Funicular de Sant Joan aún podemos seguir ascendiendo y seguir contemplando las fantásticas formaciones rocosas. Hay unas 2 horas de camino hasta el punto más alto, Sant Jeroni, desde donde podemos vislumbrar gran parte de Cataluña, los Pirineos al norte, la llanura interior al suroeste, el mar al este, y si tenemos suerte y nos acompaña un día limpio y despejado, a lo lejos, la isla de Mallorca!. Hay muchos itinerarios donde elegir, de menor dificultad, para realizar a pie y disfrutar de un magnífico día al aire libre.
A parte de las visitas religiosas y las excursiones por los senderos de la montaña, recomendamos ver el Museo de Montserrat. Buena parte de la colección de los siglos XIX-XX se compone de obras de artistas catalanes. De los siglos XIII al XVIII encontramos obras de Caravavaggio, El Greco…
